In an effort to track COVID-19 cases and symptoms on campus, Whittier College created the Health Screening Form for students to fill out every day. For the two-week period from Oct. 21 to Nov. 4, 742 students completed the form. These were unique completions of the form, which accounted for 53.5 percent of the student body.
Currently, 97 percent of the student body is vaccinated; 94 percent of faculty and staff are vaccinated. Anyone who is not vaccinated is still required to test weekly.
Since the beginning of the year, 22 members of the Whittier College community have reported positive cases of COVID-19. This accounts for approximately one percent of the Whittier College community. There is an equal number of residential students, commuter students, and staff members who have contracted COVID-19: seven per group. Only one member of faculty has contracted COVID-19, and none of WC’s contractors have.
As reported on Nov. 10, three students are in some form of isolation. One commuter student and two residential students were in isolation/observation as of last Wednesday. These numbers are updated every Wednesday, as are the number of positive COVID-19 cases on campus. You can find this information at whittier.edu/covid19/dashboard. The College also sends weekly Dashboard emails to students, staff, and faculty reporting these data.
At the beginning of the year, Whittier College deemed an ‘outbreak’ to be three connected, positive COVID-19 cases on campus. So far, there has only been one linked case, but it was not enough to constitute an outbreak. A residential student athlete tested positive for COVID-19, and there were three close contacts. One of these contacts, another residential student athlete, tested positive. Both of these students were fully vaccinated.
Keep an eye on your email and the Whittier College COVID-19 Dashboard for any updates. As we move closer to Thanksgiving break, please see “COVID-19 Holiday Rules: What to Expect” to know the protocols set in place for returning to campus, and stay safe on your short vacation.
