On Wednesday, April 21, Tina Corral, Housing Coordinator for the Whittier College Office of Housing and Residential Life, released updates regarding housing for the 2021 – 22 academic year. These updates are coming along as the situation surrounding pandemic regulations continues to change in L.A. County.

Earlier this semester, the College announced that we will be returning to campus in the Fall 2021 semester, with flexible hybrid instruction, as well as opening up housing to a limited capacity. Housing and Residential Life is committed to accommodating every student that requests housing for the upcoming academic year. Residential Life anticipates, and is preparing to have, housing for all who apply.

For the 2021 – 22 academic year, students will not be required to live on campus. Those who do not want to live on campus do not have to fill out the housing application. This removes the residency policy exemptions of previous years. Returning students that would like to live on campus will be able to start their applications on May 10, with the priority application deadline being June 6. The application for new students and transfers will open the following week, on May 17. The deadline for new/transfer students will be June 13. All applications after the deadlines will be placed on a waitlist. Lafayette Baker, the Director of Housing and Residential Life and Title IX Coordinator, stated, in response to potential shortages, “We are working on alternative housing options, and students will likely receive alternative housing information when we receive clarification from Los Angeles County Public Health as to how many students we can have on campus this fall.”

This year, students will also not be able to self-select their building or room during housing selection due to limited availability. Students will be assigned to a room by a Housing and Residential Life staff member, and preferences are not guaranteed. To ensure that you are receiving the roommate you want, you will need to make a request and accept each other on your housing applications; otherwise, you will be placed with a roommate randomly.

Singles are also limited this year. If you need to request accommodations through Student Disability Services, contact their office directly at DisabilityServices@whittier.edu or 562.907.4825 to start your paperwork. Singles are not guaranteed and will be assigned based on a lottery system. According to Housing and Residential Life, they are preparing to have triples and doubles this Fall. However, that will be based on Los Angeles County Public Health regulations, which will be received in the summer.

Housing assignments will be sent to students via their poet email during the second week of July. The College is working to ensure that we can have a safe transition back onto campus. Whittier College is committed to following CDC guidelines and L.A. County Public Health regulations to keep the community safe and healthy. If you have any questions about housing updates for 2021 – 22, please contact Housing & Residential Life at residentiallife@whittier.edu.
